Don Bryant, a major Memphis soul singer and songwriter, longtime husband and collaborator of Ann Peebles, passed away at the age of 83 on Friday, December 26. A key architect of the Hi Records sound and writer of several classics, he leaves behind a legacy that deeply shaped soul music.

From Beale Street to Royal Studio

Born in 1942 in Memphis, Don Bryant grew up surrounded by music. He first sang in his neighborhood church before joining the Four Kings, a well-known band performing on Beale Street. These early experiences in local clubs opened the doors to Royal Studio and the Hi Records label.

Under the guidance of producer Willie Mitchell, Hi Records became a cornerstone of southern soul. Don Bryant quickly established himself as a valuable songwriter. He wrote for artists such as Al Green, O.V. Wright, Syl Johnson and especially Ann Peebles, whom he met in the early 70s and married in 1974.

His pen helped shape several timeless soul tracks. I Can’t Stand the Rain remains the most iconic. Recorded by Ann Peebles in 1973, the song became widely covered and sampled. Other titles like 99 Pounds (And What’s on the Inside) or Do I Need You confirm his talent for rhythm and heartfelt simplicity.

A discreet but decisive career

Although he released a few records in the 60s and 70s, Don Bryant later devoted more time to gospel and songwriting. He remained largely behind the scenes, letting others shine. But his influence on the Hi Records aesthetic is undeniable, grounding songs that are still performed and sampled today.

In the mid-2010s, supported by Memphis musicians and Fat Possum Records, Don Bryant returned to the studio. Don’t Give Up on Love (2017) marked a successful comeback, praised as a genuine soul record in the Hi tradition. In 2020, You Make Me Feel confirmed his powerful late-career interpretation.

This renewed activity brought new tours, sometimes with Ann Peebles when her health allowed it, reconnecting with audiences delighted to celebrate a voice absent from the spotlight for too long.

With the passing of Don Bryant, we lose one of the artisans who helped define the musical identity of Memphis in the 70s. His legacy, often low-profile in the credits but ever-present in hearts and record collections, remains a foundation of American soul. His songs will continue to accompany the history of this music.
