After more than thirty years of career, James Hunter is back in the spotlight with his band The James Hunter Six and a brand new album, Off The Fence, scheduled for release on January 16, 2026 on the Easy Eye Sound label. A first single already whets our appetite!
A key figure of British rhythm & soul, GRAMMY-nominated singer and songwriter James Hunter has made his mark thanks to his gritty voice, sharp songwriting and an authenticity that turned him into a living legend. MOJO Magazine even dubbed him “The United Kingdom’s Greatest Soul Singer.”
A First Taste: A Sure Thing
The first single, “A Sure Thing”, sets the tone. With its irresistible groove, the track feels like a true shot of joy, carried by Northern Soul influences that are bound to get you dancing. James Hunter explains he initially envisioned the song in the style of the early Impressions and Curtis Mayfield, before it took on a punchier feel in the studio:
“I recorded the first demo in a hotel room in Philadelphia, on a portable eight-track… using the wastebasket as percussion!”
And as always, razor-sharp writing!
True to his songwriting method, James Hunter starts from a single word or phrase and unfolds its many nuances. And once again, it hits the mark!
“I’m a thesaurus-writer, always searching for synonyms and the right phrasing. I make a lot of demos to get the balance right.”
The album, made up of 11 original tracks, also includes a major highlight: a rare duet with longtime collaborator Van Morrison on the song “Ain’t That A Trip.” A powerful moment marking a return to Hunter’s roots.
Available on CD, vinyl (including an exclusive signed edition) and even as a collector’s test pressing, Off The Fence promises to be another showcase of soul that is both elegant and full of character. But patience is required — the album drops on January 16 via Easy Eye Sound, who keep spoiling us!
