Alphablues returns with a brand-new podcast episode. For the twenty-first letter of the alphabet, Paco turns his attention to U for USA. The birthplace of the blues, the United States occupies a unique place in musical history and imagination. A land of opportunity for some, a country of contradictions for others, it has inspired countless songs, sometimes celebrated, sometimes criticized, but rarely ignored.

The journey begins with James Brown and his explosive Living In America. Made famous by the film Rocky IV, the song embodies the triumphant America of the 1980s, full of energy, celebration and optimism. A patriotic vision delivered by an artist who had himself experienced segregation.

Several decades earlier, Chuck Berry had already expressed his love for his country with Back In The USA. Written after a tour of Australia, the song joyfully celebrates the return home. Fast food, rock’n’roll, modernity and abundance: Berry paints a portrait of a popular and cultural America, far removed from political rhetoric.

The American dream continues with The Beach Boys and Surfin’ USA. Against a backdrop of California sunshine and perfect waves, the group turns the United States into a giant playground where freedom, youth and carefree living seem everlasting.

The perspective becomes more nuanced with Debbie Davies. In Made Right In The USA, the guitarist ironically observes the gradual decline of American industry. Yet amid outsourcing and factory closures, one thing remains unmistakably American in her eyes: the blues. A declaration of love for a cultural heritage that can never be exported.

John Mellencamp takes over with R.O.C.K. In The USA. Here, the 1960s, rock’n’roll and popular culture become the country’s true symbols. It is a joyful, music-driven patriotism that celebrates America’s cultural influence above all else.

By contrast, Lenny Kravitz offers a far more critical vision with his version of American Woman. Behind this symbolic woman lie America’s darker sides: war, violence, materialism and disillusionment. A reminder that loving one’s country can also mean questioning it.

Finally, Keb’ Mo’ closes the episode with a deeply personal interpretation of America The Beautiful. Blending national pride, spirituality and a call for brotherhood, the bluesman delivers a peaceful and hopeful vision of his country.

Seven songs, seven different perspectives on the United States. Between celebration, nostalgia, criticism and genuine affection, this episode of Alphablues reminds us that the blues also tells the story of the country where it was born.
