After three nights between the Trianon and La Cigale last year, Jack White returned to the heart of the French capital last weekend ahead of the release of his new album Frozen Charlotte, due out on July 10. His two Paris shows in June sold out as soon as they were announced and were highly anticipated. Before heading to Lyon’s Fourvière Nights on June 18, Blues Actu attended the Olympia and brings you the story.

A jam-filled introduction sets the tone
The Detroit legend takes the stage as his band launches into an extended jam. The tone is set immediately. The show begins with astonishing energy and power. Jack White electrifies the audience. He initially draws heavily from his solo catalogue before launching into another jam during the introduction of It’s Rough on Rats (If You’re Asking). The room comes alive. Jack White is both a tremendous rocker and a remarkable bluesman. He proves it throughout the evening, even paying tribute to Robert Johnson with a rendition of Little Queen of Spades.

He then returns to his solo career with the iconic Love Interruption from his 2012 debut solo album Blunderbuss. Next come two classics from The White Stripes, The Same Boy You’ve Always Known and The Hardest Button to Button. Delighted by the trip down memory lane, the audience follows every note.
The band and Jack White
Jack White then launches into G.O.D. and the Broken Ribs, the lead single from his forthcoming album. It is a powerful and deeply rock-oriented song. Later in the set, he performs another track from the upcoming record, Thick as Thieves, live for the very first time. White takes a moment to introduce his band. A Jack White concert is as much about the musicians around him as it is about the man himself. He clearly places great importance on his collaborators, and it shows in the way he plays and occupies the stage. He is joined by Dominic Davis on bass, Patrick Keeler on drums and Bobby Emmett on keyboards. White jokes that he and Patrick started a small band together a few years ago. The opening notes of Steady, as She Goes by The Raconteurs quickly reveal that the band is anything but small. The crowd erupts.

A White Stripes greatest hits encore
Jack White leaves the stage before returning for an encore packed with The White Stripes classics, from Icky Thump to the inevitable Seven Nation Army. White clearly enjoys every moment. He smiles at the audience and gives the impression that he never wants to leave the stage. One hour and forty-five minutes of rock. One hour and forty-five minutes of pure live music. It was spectacular.
The following night, same venue and same starting time, the set would be shortened. The concert lasted only one hour and fifteen minutes.
A Jack White concert is complex yet minimalist, loud yet melodic. Above all, it is a sanctuary for rock music. The Nashville musician is no stranger to the legendary Paris venue, and this performance was another memorable one. The audience and the Olympia will remember it for a long time. It is also worth noting that the show was completely phone-free, with devices locked away in pouches throughout the concert. Blues Actu certainly hopes to see him back next year.
