The label Alligator Records has just announced the reissue of the legendary album Orange Blossoms by JJ Grey & Mofro, in a deluxe double vinyl edition to be released on October 31, 2025. Originally released in 2008 only on CD, this album greatly contributed to establishing JJ Grey as one of the major voices of his generation, blending blues, Southern rock, funk, and soul.
A collector’s edition for the fans
The new version offers a double 33 rpm vinyl, specially remastered to provide optimal sound. The records will be pressed on “sunburst splash” vinyl, and presented in a premium gatefold sleeve containing previously unpublished photos from the era. For Blues Actu, JJ Grey reacted with emotion to this reissue:
“Hard to believe it’s been 17 years since this album came out. Orange Blossoms was born from lived stories, intense moments, sometimes surreal.”
A landmark album
Produced by JJ Grey and Dan Prothero, Orange Blossoms brings together 12 tracks including 11 originals. It includes some of the artist’s most striking songs, ranging from gospel to Southern rock, along with deeply moving ballads. Songs such as “The Devil You Know”, “Ybor City”, and “I Believe (In Everything)” are among the audience favorites and are regularly played on Blues Actu Radio.
“The stories of Orange Blossoms are 100% tied to my home… I try not to overthink what each thing has to be. I try to step back a little. I don’t want to be a weakened caricature of myself… I let these songs write themselves. They are the stories that tell themselves.”
JJ Grey, Southern storyteller
Born near Jacksonville, Florida, JJ Grey continues the tradition of the great Southern storytellers. His music, rich in imagery and emotion, draws from the culture and landscapes of his homeland while addressing universal themes.
“You have to lose your voice to find it. That’s kind of what happened to me, and I later learned to let go. I learned to sing by thinking first about the lyrics… if you put the words first, the singing comes naturally.”
Since his debut with Blackwater in 2001, the artist has built a solid career, recognized both for the sincerity of his lyrics and the energy of his live shows. His latest album, Olustee (2024), confirmed his status as a pillar of today’s blues-rock scene. Fans now hope to see him more often at blues festivals in France, where he still remains a rare guest!
