A major figure of French blues rock since the late 60s, known for his guitar tone and gravelly voice, Paul Personne – who celebrates his 76th birthday as this article is published – brings back a key part of his discography with the box set À L’Ouest: Face A / Face B & DVD Live. Released on December 5, 2025, this reissue makes two long out-of-print albums available again, along with a live concert filmed at La Traverse in Cléon in 2011, just as the “À L’Ouest” adventure was starting.

A desire for something different

When the “À L’Ouest” band was formed, Paul Personne had nothing left to prove — except perhaps to himself. He had already moved from his early 70s bands to a long solo career that helped bring the blues back into French popular music. He had toured everywhere, released several landmark records, and earned the respect of his peers. At that point, Paul Personne had already worked with major French and international artists: Johnny Hallyday, Alain Bashung, Véronique Sanson, Jacques Higelin, Elliott Murphy, Eddy Mitchell, Albert King and Calvin Russell — his friend, to whom the album is dedicated.

With À L’Ouest, Paul Personne chose to step outside his comfort zone and return to something very simple: rediscovering the pleasure and camaraderie of having a real band around him. He explained that he wanted to “do things like back when people took the time to play together,” without overthinking or polishing. “We wanted to play music like we used to, keep it straightforward, capture the electricity of the moment. Three days to get the essence — nothing more. Keep only what feels true under the fingers.

Face A and Face B

The two albums gathered in this box reflect that approach: on one side, straight-ahead rock and strong grooves; on the other, more nuanced tracks with a style you can identify instantly. The writing carries Paul Personne’s signature: well-crafted melodies and French lyrics inspired by everyday life, the roads travelled, and the people encountered along the way.

He describes that period as a time when he wanted to let the songs “breathe.” He speaks of a down-to-earth way of working with one simple rule: “play it real, make the guitars ring, and don’t complicate things.” The recording followed that mindset — straight to the point: three days for Face A, three days for Face B. The result: two lean albums that capture a sound born on stage before it ever reaches the studio — and that probably makes all the difference.

G.L.O.R.I.A … Gloria

Paul Personne dedicated the box to Gloria, his wife and muse, who passed away in January 2025. She stood by him for decades — in his creative decisions, his tours and the risks he took. “She was there in every note, in every decision, even when we weren’t playing. Without her, this project would not have had the same meaning.” As is often the case behind a great artist, a crucial presence helps guide the way — this release also pays tribute to the woman who shared his journey.

La Traverse 2011

At the start of the tour, on December 2 and 3, 2011, Paul Personne and his band hit the stage at La Traverse — a venue well-known for its blues and rock programming. Both concerts were recorded in real conditions, capturing not only the sound but the spirit of a band on the move. A great reason to slide this box set under the Christmas tree for any late shoppers! The DVD features 13 tracks from both albums including Danser, Au bout de la route, Le monde est si grand, Sweet and Bonne soirée — along with fan favourites like the essential Barjoland.

In short, this box set is far more than a reissue of two forgotten albums. It documents a major step in Paul Personne’s career: an established musician exploring new ways to work, play and share music. It’s for all fans of French blues — and for anyone who has followed his road this far. Safe travels, Paulo — and happy birthday!
